BRIDGING THE GAP
RESEARCH and PRACTICALITY
Bottled and filtered water costs more than tap water but that does not mean it is necessarily superior. According to the National Resources Defense Council, the FDA's rules completely exempt 60 to 70 percent of the bottled water sold in the United States.
For those bottled waters which the FDA does regulate (those sold in inter-state commerce) their regulations are less stringent than the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules that apply to big city tap water.
The choice between filtered and bottled water versus tap then depends primarily on taste preference. Filtered water is definitely less expensive over time than bottled. And of course, when traveling abroad - bottled water is the wisest option since each country imposes its own rules in regards to water safety.
